چکیده

An algorithm for the estimate of the soil moisture content on a global scale from dual-frequency (Cand Xbands) microwave data of the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) is presented in this paper. The algorithm is based on the brightness temperature at C-band and uses the Polarization Index at X-band to correct for vegetation effects. The retrieval is obtained by inverting a simplified Radiative Transfer model by using the NelderMead iterative minimization method. The algorithm was validated with microwave data collected on two sites, located in Italy and in Iowa (US), during the MASMEx02 (Microwave Alpine Soil Moisture Experiment) and the SMEX02 (Soil Moisture Experiment) experiments, respectively.

Passive microwave soil moisture evaluations by ground based measurements in Korea

Passive microwave sensors have many advantages including the ability to directly measured soil moisture at large spatial scales regardless of weather conditions or time of day. However, microwave-sensed soil moisture’s inevitable limitation is that it cannot describe hydrology at the watershed because its retrieved soil moisture scale is too large. Thus, microwave-sensed soil moisture requires ...

Towards Land Surface Model Validation from Using Satellite Retrieved Soil Moisture

Land surface model validation at distributed scales is important for model improvements. Recent advances in satellite technology provide an opportunity for distributed calibration and validation of land surface models. In the past years, a number of active and passive microwave soil moisture products have become available. While passive microwave soil moisture is the preferred approach for soil...

Soil moisture retrieval from AMSR-E

The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Aqua satellite was launched on May 4, 2002. The AMSR-E instrument provides a potentially improved soil moisture sensing capability over previous spaceborne radiometers such as the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer and Special Sensor Microwave/Imager due to its combination of low frequency and higher...

ISPRS Archives XXXVIII-8/W3 Workshop Proceedings: Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture 234 EVALUATION OF AMSR-E SOIL MOISTURE PRODUCT AS AN INPUT TO CLIMATE CHANGE MODELS

Present study is an attempt to examine the suitability of soil moisture products available from Aqua-AMSR-E for their application in monsoon simulations at different temporal scales ranging from medium range to climate scales. For this purpose we have analysed the AMSR-E soil moisture products over 18 locations in India to evaluate their suitability for assimilation in numerical models. It has ...

Evaluation of AMSR-E-Derived Soil Moisture Retrievals Using Ground-Based and PSR Airborne Data during SMEX02

A Land Surface Microwave Emission Model (LSMEM) is used to derive soil moisture estimates over Iowa during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2002 (SMEX02) field campaign, using brightness temperature data from the Advanced Microwave Sounding Radiometer (AMSR)-E satellite. Spatial distributions of the near-surface soil moisture are produced using the LSMEM, with data from the North American Land Data...
